After wrapping up our shoot in Los Angeles, we had an extra day in southern California to explore and shoot some landscapes. Big thanks to Dave Hill for recommending a super-secret spot out in the desert where movies like Planet of the Apes and Lost in Space were filmed. Read more to take a look at some more behind the scenes shots I snapped along the way.
Our adventure started on a good note – I won a whopping $4 thanks to the California Lottery system. Not a bad way to start the day.
It was about a three hour drive from LA out into the desert, and once we actually got out there, the heat had climbed to 111° (sorry no photo from the rental car’s dashboard) but it was worth it, the landscape was completely alien, barren, and beautiful.
Even if it was a totally remote area, we found a few signs of life. After about an hour in the insane heat, we were thoroughly sweat-drenched and ready to move on. On the road back to LA, we found a few cool places to shoot.
I dunno who’s leaving train cars out in the middle of the desert next to salt flats like that, but whoever you are thanks for setting up an awesome photo for us.
We did make one non-photo related stop on the way back to LA, but how can you resist a casino on the side of the highway that looked like it was an Arby’s in a previous life? Sorry there aren’t any photos from inside but believe me that it was a very, very strange place. In a fitting end to a great day of shooting, we left a bit richer than we entered – one more success for the adventure.
Keep your eyes peeled for landscapes from this trip to hit the blog sometime in the near future.
