Some mornings you wake up and after a quick glance at the news, there’s a headline that just sticks with you. After a few rumors circulated last week, I woke up this AM to discover some pretty official reports that tech giant Yahoo is buying the blogging site Tumblr for a cool 1.1 billion dollars.
Immediately my mind jumped back to the crazy day in December of 2011 when we photographed Tumblr’s founder and CEO, David Karp for Wired UK. From the rooftops to the streets of Manhattan and everywhere in between – it was a shoot to remember. Keep reading for a look back at our shoot with the newly minted billionaire…
When we first received the call from our editors at Wired UK, we knew this had to be a great shoot. They wanted to portray Karp as an ambitious tech titan – both literally and visually on top of the world in New York City.
If you need to go to the top of NYC, where do you go but up? Luckily for us we had access to rooftop photo studio in midtown Manhattan.
We spent the morning shooting with Karp in that studio, both portraits on white in the studio, and then taking him out onto the roof…
and right up to the edge, all twenty stories of 7th avenue unfurling below him. If you look closely at this photo, you just might notice that his eyes are closed.
With the news that broke this morning, the Wired UK article’s 2010 title of “Tumbling on Success” has a unique irony about it. To this day, our shoot with David Karp remains in the top ten list for some of the best photos and experiences we’ve had on set. Congratulations are in order for David and the everyone over at Tumblr. Cheers!
