Fifty States Project: Arizona

chris crisman 50 states project arizona

We’re moving to the next great state on our list, Arizona. The Crisman team has traveled to Arizona a handful of times to shoot in the past few years, but the one assignment (over the course of two trips) that has really stuck with us was shooting a story on forest fires, logging, and forest conservation for The Nature Conservancy.

The crux of this assignment was to shoot the fire itself – something that a freak snowstorm in early April made impossible to do. Fire or not, we still made portraits, braving the elements to photograph essential people and landscapes for the story.

Ultimately, our editors at The Nature Conservancy decided it was best it we went back in warmer weather in search of a real fire to shoot – which, thanks to the help of our partners at the National Forest Service, we obviously found.

We owe a big thank you especially to Mary Lata, for taking us into the blaze itself, and her crew for watching over us and making sure we made it out of there safe and sound (albeit a little bit smoky).

Happy Labor Day 2014

Happy Labor Day! The Crisman team is taking the day off, but we wanted to pause and take a moment to recognize all of the hard working individuals we’ve the opportunity of photographing in the past few years. Our subjects and their work can certainly run the full gamut of what defines “labor” and we’re honored to have had the opportunity to meet and make pictures with them all.

A day’s work may take on many forms, and we’re always humbled by the new, different, and interesting individuals and occupations we encounter in our travels. Hopefully we’re all taking a well deserved break today. Cheers!

Alejandro Escovedo

Some days on set, we get lucky and get to spend an afternoon with a living legend. Earlier this year while we were down in Texas for our Unforgettable San Antonio tourism project, we did just this – shooting the country and alt-rock star, Alejandro Escovedo. Even if his name isn’t immediately familiar, chances are you still have heard his songs; for over thirty years he’s been on the scene, performing recording, touring and making awesome music. Thankfully for us, Alejandro found the time to spend an afternoon in front of our lens – keep reading to see the results…

Weekly Wrap-up, June 24-28th

chris crisman photogaraphy weekly wrap

In all seriousness, does anyone out there know where the month of June went? It feels like I blinked on May 31st and now I’m staring July right in the face. Strange. June has also been a crazy month due to the lack of weekly wrap-ups. All apologies there, but we’ve just been so busy that it can be hard to find the time. Fortunately we have a moment to take a breath and reflect on what we’ve been up to for the past few days. Despite the tropical weather, it’s been a good week back at home base in Philadelphia – keep reading to see what we’ve been up to…

How We Travel.

chris crisman photography how we travel tips and tricks

We travel a lot. So much in fact that you could say we have it down to a science. Before we even arrive at the airport, Chris and our team know that everything is in order – when you’re on the road and up in the air as much as we are, you can’t leave anything to chance. How do we do it? Keep reading for an in-depth look at how we travel…

From The Archive: Florida Lifestyle

It’s January, it’s winter, it’s cold.

Chris and the rest of our crew certainly get around this country and beyond, but this week we’re back at home base in Philadelphia and it’s chilly. The weather put me in a mindset to remember what we were up to right around now in 2011, when we headed down to Florida for our first lifestyle portfolio shoot. We packed up our gear, as well as some sunglasses and took off to the sunshine state to make some beautiful photos. We couldn’t have asked for a better week, but the pictures speak for themselves. 2013 – A look Forward

And we’re back.

After a much needed bout of rest and relaxation for Chris, myself, and everyone else on team Crisman, we’re excited to be back in action looking ahead to 2013. I always find the first few weeks of the year to be an interesting time – it feels almost like the first moments before dawn, right before the sun rises. You’re a little groggy, bleary eyed, but excited and hopeful for what the day ahead will bring.

Even though we’re only in the early dawn of the year, there’s a ton to be excited about already. As I’m writing this Chris is already on the road headed out to a shoot, and later this week we’ll be making our way down south for another project. Beyond that we’ve got a handful of adventures planned this year, and who knows what else will crop up along the way.

As for this blog in 2013 – we’ll keep sharing! We’ve spent the last two years telling our story and the new year can only bring bigger and better things for this blog. We’re curious though, what else do you want to know? What other information can we share? What do you really want to know? Drop us a line in the comments or @crismanphoto & @robertluessen.
