The Cleveland Vibrator Company

Back in February, we made our way to Cleveland Ohio to shoot a portfolio of the hardworking men and women behind the Cleveland Vibrator Company, an all-American company that is almost a century old. We shared behind the scenes stills and video while we were there and now we’re happy to share a few of the finished images of these genuine, hardworking people. Keep reading to see the rest.

Lots of parts are for their equipment are machined and hand-milled in house. Their attention to detail is inspiring.

We shot Brian a few ways – we shot him welding a few extra times because he was concerned that his first set of welds weren’t looking good enough for the camera.

Sparky manned the plasma cutter and almost any other piece of machinery that needed his attention on the factory floor.

Hopefully we’ll return to Cleveland in the future to make more portraits of everyone at the Cleveland Vibrator Company. When we do, we’ll make sure to share.

  1. Very inspirational work. I’d be interested to know if you only lit the people and relied solely on ambient for the backgrounds. Or did you light any of the factory as well? Did you use gels to offset the ambient? Thanks so much.

  2. Thanks Gene – we lit both the subjects and backgrounds, but allowed for the ambient exposures to be blended in to the final image. Hope this helps!
