We’re moving to the next great state on our list, Arizona. The Crisman team has traveled to Arizona a handful of times to shoot in the past few years, but the one assignment (over the course of two trips) that has really stuck with us was shooting a story on forest fires, logging, and forest conservation for The Nature Conservancy.
The crux of this assignment was to shoot the fire itself – something that a freak snowstorm in early April made impossible to do. Fire or not, we still made portraits, braving the elements to photograph essential people and landscapes for the story.
Ultimately, our editors at The Nature Conservancy decided it was best it we went back in warmer weather in search of a real fire to shoot – which, thanks to the help of our partners at the National Forest Service, we obviously found.
We owe a big thank you especially to Mary Lata, for taking us into the blaze itself, and her crew for watching over us and making sure we made it out of there safe and sound (albeit a little bit smoky).

Next up in our Fifty States Project is the very far north and very beautiful state of Alaska. We’re going back to the summer of 2011 when Chris made an expedition up above the lower 48 for a week of truly inspiring Landscape photography (and well maybe just a tiny bit of salmon fishing too).
Having only one (very) close call with a grizzly bear… Chris returned with hundreds of stunning images of natural beauty and serene moments from the largest state in the union.
Make sure to check out these as well as the rest of our landscape work over at crismanphoto.com!
We’re kicking off our A-Z fifty states project with none other than the great state of Alabama. Way back in 2009, Chris took a trip down to the town of Pelham, Alabama photograph champion bass fisher Kim Bain-Moore for Field & Stream magazine.
Chris and Kim spent the day out on the water making photos and attempting to catch some fish. The Crisman team has passed through Alabama a few times since, but this shoot still remains our best memories from that state!
Although we’re only just half way through 2014, this year has already afforded the Crisman team opportunities to travel to beautiful and inspiring places, meet interesting and unique subjects, and do what we do best, all along the way. Yes, in a sense this happens every year, but 2014 marked a particular milestone for Chris that’s worth sharing: As of July 2014, Chris has either shot in, or traveled through all fifty states. We can guarantee that every single one of our shoots and adventures has some story to tell behind it, and we couldn’t think of a better place than right here on the blog to share those stories.
Fifty states, fifty stories, fifty blog posts. Stay tuned in the coming weeks, months, and maybe even years as we take a look at our journey across this great country. We can guarantee lots of photos, lots of randomness, and well we’re not really sure what else.
