There are some truly creative people in this industry. Let’s face it, you’ve got to be constantly concepting, developing, and executing or you get left in the dust. I’m fortunate to work with some really dynamic and inspiring people, ranging from art directors, to producers, to creative directors, photo editors, art buyers, and print producers. Instead of questions about email blasts, printed promos, and portfolio reviews, I think that it’s time that I put some of them on the spot to show us their meaning of Life. “The meaning of Life†may be a little far flung to answer in only ten questions, but hopefully these interviews will serve to distill some of the inspired and intellectual energy of the creatives that we work with.
There’s something to be said about a photographer who can cut through the noise and capture authentic emotion and feeling from their subjects. It’s even better when that photographer is a master at creating a a mood and feel in his images that not only entices the viewer, but makes them jealous they’re not living the life of the models in front of the lens. David Martinez has an acute sense of what makes a compelling lifestyle image, and I’m proud that we share the same agency. Enough from me though, I’ll let David tell the rest…
1. Name one actor you’d like to portray you in a movie about your life?
Daniel Craig. No explanation required, right?
2. What is your preferred vehicle or mode of transportation?
Surfboard. Does that count?
3. What is your favorite beverage for creative inspiration?
A good red wine outside. A warm summer night helps too. But really, most of my creative inspiration seems to come to me on a good long run.
4. Name your all time favorite band, singer, or album?
My musical taste is pretty varied – it really depends on what kind of mood I’m in. Check out some of my favorites on my Spotify playlist.
5. Name one place in the world that you’ve been and can’t wait to return to and why?Â
I visited the Basque coast a couple of times in the past few years and there is a town called Guethary – which is just south of Biarritz – it has great surf, great food, great wine and beautiful people.
6. What is favorite shoot of all time?
Every day is my favorite shoot of all time. I really love my job – I feel really fortunate to be able to do what I do, to meet all the people I meet and to go all the places I get to go. It’s always a big adventure. If you really pressed me, I would say my favorite shoots are the ones that get me up in time to see the sun rise and keep me out long enough to see the sun set.
7. What is your philosophy on creating and inspiring?
Turn off the screens, take out your headphones, keep your eyes open. No one can pinpoint where inspiration really lives – I’ve always thought that you have to be ready to see it, hear it, find it. You can never “think” your way into inspiration – I’ve always had to find a way to turn things off in order create, to be inspired. Inspiration can come anywhere and everywhere – for me it can come when I’m walking my dog, catching a wave, listening to music on the freeway….
8. Describe a defining moment in your career that has led you to where you are today?
When I was 16, I was interested in photography but I never realized how transformative it could be until I saw Worlds in a Small Room by Irving Penn. Nobody had photographed those subjects the way Irving Penn did – by simplifying the space in which people existed – bringing a backdrop all over the world and photographing people – you were able to focus more on the person in the picture, connect easier to who they were. These powerful images made it clear to me that I wanted to make a life as a photographer.
9. Name one person you wish you could have a drink with and why?
Paul Newman- I’m sure he has great stories, has some fast cars and is just a inspirational human being – I really respect the way he lived his life.
10. If the world is ending in 2013, how will you change your life plan?
I wouldn’t change a thing – I try to live every day with my eyes open ready to enjoy whatever comes my way.
